Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - SARAPO (3) debuted over 1200m at Gosford three weeks ago where he closed in good style but couldn't pick up stablemate Hidden Achievement who had the race experience edge. He meets that colt slightly better at the weights today and is suited over an extra 100m on a bigger track. Great chance to turn the tables. HIDDEN ACHIEVEMENT (1) settled a lot closer last time out and was a shade too good for Sarapo at Gosford. Has only raced twice so there is room for further improvement. Sure to run well again. ZEBRA FINCH (6) overcame early interference to work home well for third over 1400m at Hawkesbury four weeks ago. Kept fresh and the blinkers go on so she is a live chance despite coming back a little in trip. NAMASTE (2) was outclassed first-up at Group Two level in Brisbane. Consistent performer last prep and with blinkers on today should improve sharply.
RACE 2 - CANADIAN RULER (1) is racing in career-best form for Matthew Dale and is a great chance to chalk up the hat trick. Picked up nicely in the heavy ground at Hawkesbury last time over this distance. Drops 1.5kgs today so despite going up a level looks the one to beat again. MY LAST HOORAY (3) caught the eye two back at Warwick Farm then was ridden on pace last time out over 1200m at Randwick and couldn't quicken as required. Might be looking for this trip now so he deserves another chance. WARRIOR FOR PEACE (10) was lining up for only the fourth time when he came from next to last to record a stunning win over the mile at Scone recently. Back a little in trip and goes from a Class 1 to a Class 3 but he has tremendous scope for improvement. BOYS NIGHT OUT (2) has been racing well in Brisbane and should be cherry ripe fourth-up. Always respect Matthew Dunn runners in Highways. STRAIGHT FIRE (16) strips fitter and is in the mix with a light weight.
RACE 3 - I AM BRAVE (14) was well found in betting on debut last time out over 1000m at Scone and got the job done in good style. Needs a bit of luck from the wide draw but with plenty of improvement in store she should be highly competitive. OAKFIELD BADGER (3) has been on or about the money all prep. Not much luck at Gosford last time and a top three finish at odds is not out of the question. Last start Kembla winner LET'S GO AGAIN (13) will push forward from a wide alley and can make her presence felt with even luck. LADY EXTREME (7) resumes and gets her chance to break last preps string of second places.
RACE 4 - FEAR NO EVIL (2) is deep into his maiden prep and keeps raising the bar. Led all the way for a tough win over 1600m at Warwick Farm last start. Gets in with 2kgs less after Wadick's claim. Ready to transition to Saturday racing. LIKE LUKEY (12) came with a mighty finish from worse than midfield to be beaten under a length when resuming over 1400m at Scone last time out. Goes well second-up so over an extra 100m she will be difficult to hold out. INTERJECTION (1) earned a crack at the Group Two Queensland Guineas last start after an eye-catching third in the South Pacific Classic but it proved too much. Big chance back in more modest company. MAORI CHIEF (6) has won two from two this prep in midweekers at the Kensington track. Progressive three-year-old from the Waller camp who looks ready for this harder task. Consistent mare CALIFORNIA SUNRISE (13) will be cherry ripe at her third run back and cannot be left out of calculations.
RACE 5 - ISLAND DEC (8) dropped sharply in grade but gave away too much start on a heavy surface at Canterbury last time out. Kept fresh since that outing a month ago. Gets some weight relief and has drawn favourably so a big run at odds is on the cards. POWER BALLARD (7) led but couldn't sustain the pressure when a close fifth first-up over 1250m at the Kensington track. Has a far better record at this trip so with the run under the belt she poses a serious threat. POWER OF THE BRAVE (2) was flying at the provincials before a commendable effort in a good BM68 over 1000m at Gosford recently. Genuine type who is well in after Stanley's claim and should make his presence felt. MASSIRA (3) got too far back at Scone last time but made late inroads. Needs luck from the wide alley but is too honest to rule out. CATAHOULA (11) is fitter for two runs back from a spell and might be a big improver with blinkers on for the first time.
RACE 6 - EDITED BY (1) wasn't far away two back over 1400m at the Kensington track then tackled a similar race at the same circuit last start and was disappointing in the run home. Races well here and his best efforts measure right up so he deserves another chance. FURIOUS (3) gave away a huge start and just failed to pull off a remarkable win over 1400m at the Kensington track recently. Fitter for two runs back from a spell and over this slightly longer trip is sure to prove tough to hold out. ENTER THE DRAGON (4) defeated the promising Hurstville Zagreb at Gosford last start to make it an impressive five wins from seven appearances. No reason that form won't continue. LITTLE COINTREAU (7) has been about the mark of late and is ready to peak at the fourth run back.
RACE 7 - The lightly raced BRAVE ONE (16) resumed on a heavy track at Canterbury last start where he got the nose in front at the furlong but tired late and found one better. Strips fitter and on the limit looks a great chance to register a second career win. Godolphin's KERGUELEN (10) returns for a third prep and protects a 100% top three strike rate. Only raced once last prep and was narrowly defeated over 1100m at Canterbury. Yet to contest a race of this quality but is certainly up to the task. CRAFTY EAGLE (8) did a fair job first-up at Gosford after a slow getaway. Capable of squeezing into the top four at big odds. UNSTOPABULL (9) fitter second-up and slightly out in trip. Likes the Heavy and can feature.
RACE 8 - A few last start winners have claims again, headed by GLORY DAZE (5) who worked into the race before the turn then dug deep for an impressive win last Saturday over this trip at Randwick. Lightly raced six-year-old who can hold the good form at this stage of the campaign. PRIVATE LEGACY (9) appreciated the drop in class last time out when the comfortable winner of the Listed Centaurea Stakes against the mare in Adelaide. Very fit now so at the weights she can measure up against the boys. SHAHZAD (13) quickly put a plain first-up run behind him when he took out a BM78 over 2200m at the Gold Coast last start. Imported galloper who has taken a little while to settle in but can go on with it now. MAJOR BEEL (1) gave a hint that he might be ready to find form when he led and battled on well for fifth recently in the Scone Cup over the mile. Needs this trip now and if able to dictate might be tough to reel in. DON DIEGO DE VEGA (11) is always a threat when fresh from a spell.
RACE 9 - Victorian raider FREIGHT TRAIN (12) is a big chance in a wide-open affair. Settled well back then attacked the line well to just miss the placings last time out over 2000m at Caulfield. Very fit gelding who drops 4kgs today and although untested in the going deserves the benefit of the doubt. KIND WORDS (7) came from a minute back and might have been unlucky not to win Cormac T's race at Scone a fortnight ago. Rock hard fit after four runs back from a spell and if they can make ground this late in the day she is a decent chance. CORMAC T (8) had to dig deep to keep the swoopers at bay over 1700m at Scone last start. Carries the same weight today after Nock's claim and can improve at only the third run of the campaign. Last start Warwick Farm winner SEAFALL (4) has won two from two at this stage of the prep so must be considered.
RACE 10 - Absolute lottery. MONTE KATE (6) raced on the speed then pulled out plenty to score last start over this distance in a Midway at Gosford. Faces a deeper race today and might not get much peace up front but with further improvement in store she is a nice bet at odds. PAJANTI (7) has been kept fresh since savaging the line to get up for second when resuming over this trip at Randwick five weeks ago. Excellent wet tracker who poses the biggest threat. TOTOKA (15) was outclassed in the Denise's Joy at Scone a fortnight ago after a couple of strong lead-up performances. Can bounce back in this company. The sparingly raced SUMMER FLAME (22) sprung an upset first-up at Listed level. Has room to improve and can prove that was no fluke.
