Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - The $160,000 Listed Show A Heart for the babies. SUNRAYS (13) hasn't done much wrong to start the career winning four of five with the only 'failure' coming when runner-up in the G3 Ken Russell on resumption. Berry sticks following the past two efforts and looks ready for the step-up to the 1500m now. Sure to be in the finish. JUST A JOURNEY (15) has put back-to-back NSW victories together and is racing with a lot of confidence. Looms as the main danger. PROVIDENCE (8) wasn't too far away placing at Randwick on debut and will have derived a stack of benefit from that day at the races. Respect the deadly Waller/McDonald combination. The well-related NAVY PILOT (2) (full to 2xG2 winner Tiz Invincible) draws the inside alley and can make his presence felt. JENNI GONE BONKERS (16) next in line from the Maher yard.
RACE 2 - The $160,000 Listed Lightning Handicap. STEADY READY (1) resumes here but loves this track and trip posting four wins and a second from just six outings. Revved up for this with two strong trial victories and a strong showing while fresh would not surprise. PISANELLO (2) made up a bunch of ground late in the Ortensia at Scone and will be ready to peak now. Winning rider McDonald reunites and is expected to measure up. The well-related AUSTMARR (11) (half to G3 winner and G1 placed Hanseatic) wasn't too far away in G1 company last time out and is sure to appreciate the drop back in grade here. Top-three credentials. METALART (13) grows a leg for hoop Rodd who has six wins and a placing from just eight steers. Cannot be discounted. OUR KOBISON (3) best of the rest while fresh.
RACE 3 - MARE OF MT BULLER (8) saluted at Group 3 level two back before filling the frame in the Listed The Coast at Gosford last time out. Has a solid record over this mile journey only missing a drum once in five attempts and should be right there at the business end again. Kiwi mare PULCHRITUDINOUS (2) showed sharp improvement saluting at Doomben last time out and will have derived a stack of confidence from that breakthrough victory. Clark sticks in the irons and can go back-to-back now. VIVY AIR (7) doesn't win out of turn but is usually thereabouts and will be rock-hard fit for this. Worth serious consideration. LEKVARTE (1) is a bit hit or miss but is more than capable enough on her day. Keep safe. MISS JOELENE (3) will find this easier than what she faced in the Doomben Cup and looks a must for the multiples.
RACE 4 - The $300,000 Group 2 Moreton Cup. FRONT PAGE (8) didn't get it all his own way in the Quokka over in the west and has since been given a bit of a freshen up. Saves his best form for this six-furlong journey and has a bit of class over most of these. A bounce back to form looks on the cards. A LITTLE DEEP (13) just missed the placings at G1 level last time out and gets in well at the weights for a race like this. Gets gun hoop Williams in the saddle and should be going very close. PUNCH LANE (1) has put back-to-back wins together and is racing with a lot of confidence of late. Include in calculations. HIDDEN WEALTH (2) has been a touch disappointing in both runs this time in work but should be ready to show something now third-up. Worth another chance. WARNIE (7) doesn't know how to run a bad race and can trouble the judge again.
RACE 5 - The $200,000 Listed Queensland Day Stakes. Victorian WINNASEDGE (2) is a consistent commodity who has only missed the top-five once in 11 career outings and is yet to miss a place in four attempts over this six-furlong journey. Drawn perfectly for Zahra in gate four and looks to have found the right race here. GERRINGONG (10) returned in good order with a close-up second in the Denise's Joy at Scone and will have taken a lot from that first-up hit-out. May go one better against this line-up. AMELITA (9) was too bad to be true at the latest effort but is much better than that run suggests. Can improve sharply without surprising. Kiwi raider VELOCIOUS (7) brings solid form from across the ditch and any market confidence must be noted. COLEMAN (1) draws the inside alley and can feature if he brings his A-game.
RACE 6 - The $160,000 Listed Spear Chief Handicap. FUKUBANA (16) got a well-deserved victory at Doomben at the latest effort and will take some confidence from that breakthrough win. Has saluted on all going and gets in on the minimum weight in this contest. Capable of testing his rivals. TRANSATLANTIC (6) is a three-time winner around this circuit and gets Maloney on board to navigate from the carpark draw. Can play a role with any luck in running. TAVS (18) is three from three here at this venue and is drawn perfectly for Jones in gate six. Has to be included in calculations. RISING PACIFIC (12) has won four of his past five starts and has been given a bit of a freshen up for the drop back in trip here. Hard to ignore winning form. DESERT LIGHTNING (1) has been plying his trade in much harder G1 races and a return to form would not shock.
RACE 7 - The $1 million Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup. JOLIESTAR (10) made up a bunch of ground to narrowly miss in the All Aged last time out and has since been given a bit of a freshen up to drop back slightly in trip here. Had a very easy trial in preparation for this and can make her presence felt against this line-up. GIGA KICK (1) was a touch disappointing on face value in the Goodwood but will have taken a lot of benefit from that hit-out and there's no doubting his class. Can return to winning form. BENEDETTA (12) has been just behind the placegetters in elite level of late and has won two from three over this distance range. Genuine top-three aspirations. KIMOCHI (11) should be ready to peak now fourth-up and gets Williams on from a low draw. Ticks a few boxes. Old boy ROTHFIRE (3) showed he still has some life in his legs last start and looks one for the exotics players.
RACE 8 - The $700,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks. The penny has dropped for the well-related PHILIA (2) (half to 3xG1 winner Duais) who has strung four wins together on the bounce this campaign including a strong victory in The Roses at the latest effort. Is two from two around this circuit and the extra furlong here shouldn't pose an issue. Will be right there when the whips are cracking. BENAGIL (1) was a touch disappointing in The Roses but go on the solid Oaks win at Morphettville two back. Worth another chance. JENNI'S MEADOW (6) hit the line with gusto in The Roses and is drawn to get all the favours from the inside marble. Will make her presence felt. MOVIN OUT (3) gets the reliable Waller/McDonald combination and is sure to be thereabouts. PINITO (8) is yet to miss a place in ten career outings and has to be included.
RACE 9 - A cracking edition of the $1 million Group 1 Queensland Derby. STATUARIO (3) gave a big sight but just got run down late in the SA Derby last time out. Goes well for Allen who is yet to miss a drum in three rides and maps perfectly from gate five. Will be rock-hard fit for this and can go one better to bring up the Group 1. KING OF THUNDER (4) hit the frame in the Rough Habit at the latest effort and will be better for that hit-out. Must be respected from the O'Shea/Charlton barn. FEMMINILE (16) was super impressive saluting in the SA Derby last start and will have derived a stack of confidence from that breakthrough victory. Don't dismiss lightly. The well-related LAVALIER (6) (half to 3xG1 winner Helmet and 2xG1 winner Epaulette) doesn't win out of turn but may trouble the judge with the right run in transit. BELLE DETELLE (17) next in line but will need some luck from the horror draw.
RACE 10 - The $160,000 Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes. Former Victorian FLOOZIE (7) hasn't put a hoof wrong since joining the new stable stringing three wins together on the bounce and it's hard to knock mares in form. Jones has been in the irons for all three victories and stays on board here. Can continue the picket fence. KIN (6) has hit the frame in both runs this campaign and looks to be building up to another win. Rates a serious threat. COMRADE ROSA (5) is a four-time winner around this circuit and gets Williams on board to navigate from the sticky draw. Top-three commodity. TASHI (9) saves her best form for this six-furlong journey and is usually thereabouts. One for the multiples. COEUR VOLANTE (1) is a bit hit or miss but is more than capable enough on her day. Respect any market confidence.
