Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - CENTRAL COAST (1) has the race experience edge on some key rivals and gets the nod on that basis. Well supported on debut last start and looked the winner only to be nailed near the line over this course and distance. Doesn't need to improve all that much to take this out. CAVIAR (2) is a Frankel colt on debut for Waterhouse/Bott and looks the biggest threat. Ran second in his most recent trial at Rosehill. Tim Clark will give him every chance out of a good gate. First starter SAINT ALDWYN (7) heads a strong Chris Waller contingent. By Zoustar from a Commands mare who has produced four winners from as many foals to race. A good second in a recent trial suggests he has ability. KILBRANNAN (5) was in the money at Kembla on debut. Likely improver. KOKATAHI (6) is another Waller first starter hasn't set the world on fire at the trials but is worth monitoring for market support.
RACE 2 - Plenty of first starters so some guesswork involved. Pierro debutante AVENUE MONTAIGNE (2) looks the goods for Waterhouse/Bott following a couple of nice trials, the latest a second on 29 May at Rosehill. Might lead from gate one and will take some running down. STRAIGHT SETS (6) is a half-sister to the handy Fire Star making her debut. Has won both trials impressively and looks ready to make an immediate impact. $3 million yearling purchase ERNAUX (1) has a fair way to go to recoup the expense. Resumed with an eye-catching second in a 1100m Warwick Farm maiden last start. Will enjoy the extra trip here and should be tough to hold out. Gai and Adrian's KAKADU SUNSET (4) steps out for the first time. By Extreme Choice from a Sebring mare. The latest trial was encouraging so keep close tabs on her. YATTAZOU (8) went a lot better at her most recent trial and cannot be ignored on debut for the Waller stable.
RACE 3 - This is more like a provincial maiden than city class. DWAYNE (1) is deep into his maiden campaign and won't get a better chance to break through. Encountered a very heavy track at Goulburn last start and was eased out of the race after dipping badly a couple of times. Form before that was solid - the fact that stable is persevering is a positive sign that all is well. RIGHTEOUS LEGEND (2) has been about the mark at all three runs this time in work. Struggled to quicken as required over 1300m at Kembla last time which suggested he needs more ground which he gets today. Should be ready to peak. CANTARITO (6) battled on evenly to finish fourth when resuming over 1300m at Warwick Farm recently. Nicely placed over the extra ground this time so worth following. PIERRO'S GIRL (7) finished just ahead of Cantarito when resuming at the Farm a fortnight ago. Won't spend a cent from the inside draw and should be competitive again. SLEUTH (3) can also improve at the second run back.
RACE 4 - DYAMI (2) returned from a ten-month break with a gallant second last start over 1100m at Warwick Farm. Copped a little interference in the run home that day which may have been costly. Lightly raced gelding who will take a lot from that run and out to this trip can go one better. MARAIS (5) has been frustrating for connections, collecting nine minor placings in twelve appearances. Had a seven-week let-up before a last start fifth over 1100m at Warwick Farm. Strips fitter and this is a far more suitable journey. CINSAULT (8) was first-up for eleven months last start when she registered her sixth minor placing from as many runs, boxing on well for second over 1300m at the Farm. Draws a nice gate and gets her chance. MISS JONES (10) is another who will strip fitter today after a decent return at Warwick Farm recently and is not out of contention. WA WA WA (6) is next best at his first run back. Yet to miss the frame in three starts and a recent trial should have him ready to run well.
RACE 5 - ANDERSON BRIDGE (11) has disappointed at his last couple of appearances, both on heavy tracks. Was a shade unlucky two back at the Kensington track as favourite but didn't go a yard last time. Drops back in grade today and might be worth one more chance in an ordinary race. NATURAL DEDUCTION (10) returned with a decent effort at Warwick Farm two back then went poorly here last time on a bog track. Fitter and can improve if this track dries out. MIZELLA (12) hasn't been far away at her last couple. Good each-way option down in the weights. LENNOX (7) improved last time out at his second run since coming from the UK. Needs this sort of trip so he can progress further for the Archibald stable. FIOPROSPERO (5) has been freshened up. Won a couple of decent races in Brisbane earlier in the prep and is good enough to test this field.
RACE 6 - LA SIGNORA DANE (11) added to her imposing record with a game win over 1250m here last time out. Mares in form are great betting propositions so in a similar race she is worth sticking with. HARRY'S BAR (10) resumed in good order in a Rosehill Midway last start. Maps beautifully just off the speed from an ideal draw and with that run under the belt looms as a serious contender. FIRST PERSON (5) is super honest with three wins from five starts this time in work. Led but found one better over this distance at Rosehill last time out. Big chance back in midweek company. HANAU (4) returns from a lengthy spell. Has won twice and been placed for times in his career, all at today's journey. Two recent trials should have him forward enough to run well. CATAHOULA (14) has just fair at Rosehill last start after a couple of near misses to kick off the campaign in Melbourne. Down in class today and should be competitive.
RACE 7 - Most of the main hopes come off poor last start runs which makes this tricky. PARDON MY FRENCH (11) just missed two back over 1200m at Sandown then got a long way back before finishing off just fairly at Sale last time. Lightly raced mare who Maher brings to NSW for the first time. Worth the gamble. WILLIE OPPA (14) started this prep off in good style before a flop last start over 2000m at Randwick. Better placed back to this trip in midweek company so a quick return to form looks on the cards. NO DRAMA (1) won with a bit in hand here at this trip two back then found 1400m too sharp last time. In the right race today and can bounce back. LOCKDOWN GAMBLE (4) has been freshened up since failing in the Parkes Cup over 1600m a month ago. Best form is good enough to test this field. SERENE NIC (12) is an each-way hope down in the weights.
